WACA Gambia project delivers 34 floodwater pumps to communities, National Disaster Management Agency and local authorities to support flood response.

Thirty-four floodwater pumps were handed over in June 2024 to high-risk communities, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and local authorities in Kanifing and Brikama by the WACA Project.

The machines include 30 portable pumps with a capacity to pump 60,000 liters of water in an hour for the 11 communities along the Kotu Stream and four heavy-duty machines with a capacity to pump 522,000 liters of water in an hour. Two of the heavy-duty pumps are meant for NDMA and one each for Kanifing Municipal Council and Brikama Area Council.

The chairman of Brikama Area Council, Yankuba Darboe, commended WACA for providing communities and local authorities with pumps to prepare for the rainy season.

The procurement of the pumps is part of the short-term interventions commissioned by the WACA Project to reduce the risk of flooding across the Kotu Stream. Chairman Darboe acknowledged the short-term works, saying clearing the Kotu Stream will “facilitate stormwater flow during the rainy season and minimize the risk of flooding thereby protecting lives and livelihoods”.
