Thousands sensitized on disaster risk management and early warning systems in a landmark awareness campaign in The Gambia.

The National Disaster Management Agency and the WACA Project rolled out a 15-day awareness campaign in all 11 communities along the Kotu Stream to sensitize residents about disaster risk management and early warning systems that could save lives during a crisis. The campaign was conducted between August 31 and September 14, 2024.

Twenty volunteers from the various communities took part in the door-to-door campaign which sought to provide communities along the Kotu Stream and beyond with timely information to be able to adequately prepare and access important resources to strengthen their resilience.

Ahead of the campaign, all volunteers were trained in crisis communication, disaster risk management, early warning systems and some key messages in disaster risk reduction.

Several community members welcomed the initiative, describing the messages shared with them as crucial to preparing and responding to natural disasters in their communities.
