After a 12-year wait, Gambia gets new National Disaster Risk Management Policy funded by WACA
The Gambia National Disaster Risk Management Policy 2024-2033 has been validated by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and stakeholders, after a twelve-year gap without a disaster management policy for the country. The policy was developed with funding from the WACA Project and through extensive national and community consultations.
“This National Disaster Risk Management Policy and strategy will serve as a blueprint for disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery from disasters in The Gambia,” said Sanna Dahaba, the Executive Director of NDMA. “It is imperative that the document is fit for purpose and… strengthens the resilience of communities to external shocks, reducing vulnerability and exposure to disasters.”
The policy is the first of its kind supported by the West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project II (WACA ResIP II) The Gambia. It is part of broader efforts by the WACA to strengthen institutions, build resilience and support national disaster risk management efforts.
